Part of the Jehiel Brooks Farm, this area was first subdivided into Brookland in 1887; Catholic U, Fransican Monastery, & St Anthony's Church all became part of the original development, urging immigrants to settle here. 1260 Kearny St was built sometime between 1900-1905, & was originally a stop for farmers from NC bringing their wares to the North to sell. The nearby streetcar and B&O train gave access to the western states--making it a perfect place to stop & also gave folks a reason to move 'out of the city' as commuting was easy to do. In the roaring 20s this home doubled as a speakeasy hidden in the top floor attic! Life at 1260 Kearny pivoted in the 40s and 50s to being a rooming house, family residence, & eventually rental housing for several notable punk rock bands and musicians of the 80s.
